9th International Mammalogy ConferenceAugust 1, 2005 9th International Mammalogy Conference, Japan - In August, Jim Sanderson, TEAM Research Scientist, co-chaired a session devoted to camera trapping at the 9th International Mammalogy Conference in Sapporo. Jim opened the session by giving a talk on the history of camera trapping that was prepared with Mark Jenkins, a historian for the National Geographic Society; then in the afternoon session he presented a talk on the TEAM camera trapping protocol that is used to monitor medium and large terrestrial mammals. During the session, talks were given on how to monitor bats using camera traps and on results from camera trapping in Japan and Zambia. The sessions were well attended and many lively discussions followed each presentation. Of great interest were the talks on the statistical analysis of data collected with camera traps. It was widely agreed that a standard camera trapping monitoring protocol was necessary so that data collected across many sites could be compared. The TEAM protocol is simple but it still retains its statistical rigor. The 10th International Mammalogy Conference will be held in Santiago, Chile in 4 years and camera trapping results from established TEAM project sites will be presented then. |
