First TEAM Network Meeting

February 10, 2006

Participants
Participation in this meeting was by invitation only. In addition to selected individuals from the existing TEAM network, participants included scientists from outside the existing network, from elsewhere in Latin America, and from Africa, Asia, Europe and the U.S.

Description of the meeting
This meeting was an important scientific milestone for TEAM. One of the outcomes was a special issue of a journal or a peer-reviewed book focused on the scientific requirements and challenges confronting a global biodiversity monitoring network. The publication will contain a series of multi-authored papers that outline the scientific vision for TEAM, including:

  • The overall spatial sampling framework

  • The biodiversity monitoring protocols, including the methods and the underlying rationale for each protocol

  • The analytical framework for using the data generated by each protocol to quantify and forecast changes in biodiversity at regional to global scales, as well as synthesizing what we have learned from the TEAM data gathered to date and the framework for data management and global dissemination.

To ensure we accomplished this objective, this was a working meeting, with a series of parallel working groups. Because participants came from around the world, the official meeting language was English. By the end of the meeting, each working group produced an initial draft manuscript for one section of the publication.

What the meeting was not

This was not a traditional meeting in which people present papers or listen to others present papers. This was not a discussion about individual site-based questions and analyses.
