Animal surprises at Cocha CashuOctober 5, 2011 I am glad to report that we are identifying the last set of the camera trap pictures. I had to use the help of all my ornithologist friends to help me since my knowledge of birds is terrible. Needless to say, several friends that have been at Cocha Cashu, help me with this task and I am glad to report that so far we have identified 28 species of mammals (and we are not including rats and small oppossums yet so this number could be higher) 14 bird species (we are also missing 5 birds that are too small), and one black caiman (do not ask me how he got in the pic). We have a new bird species recorded for Manu, Geotrygon violaceae but this still needs to be confirmed by Barry Walker, expert birder in the area. The cameras recorded 27,000 pictures, of the mammal community we have only in one grid (30 cameras): 10 locations with jaguar pictures, 13 locations with tapir pictures, 13 pictures with Leopardus pardalis and 6 locations with Pumas. We are still analyzing the other grid but that promises to have more peccaries and pumas. Long time ago we published an article with John Terborgh and several other people claiming that Cocha Cashu is a pristine site compared to other sites in the same National Park or similar areas. I think the cmaera trap project proved this and more. Thanks TEAM!! Muchos SALUDOS Patricia
