A 5.5-magnitude earthquake hit the highlands of Madagascar just after 1 am of 12 January 2017 and lasted around 15-20 seconds in duration. The United States Geological Service said it was centered south of the lakeside town of Betafo (in central Madagascar), just a few miles from the border between Antananarivo and Fianarantsoa provinces and the effects were felt in Ranomafana. Earthquakes are infrequent in Madagascar. Fortunately, there have not been reports of injury or significant damage.
