Pasoh on board TEAM

December 15, 2011

The Pasoh Forest Reserve (FR) is one of the oldest and most well-known research site for lowland tropical rainforest ecological studies in the Southeast Asian region. Its strength in research has always been in tropical forest dynamics where vigorous tree growth and mortality data were collected for as long as since the 1970s. A 50-ha permanent forest dynamic plot was established in 1985 by the Centre for Tropical Forest Science (CTFS) and the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University. It is through this collaboration with CTFS that Pasoh was introduced to TEAM (and vice versa). Pasoh was invited to host a technical workshop in November 2010 during its 25th anniversary celebrations of the CTFS plot. After much potting around with paperwork, getting the right people for the job, and planning the research design the TEAM project in Pasoh was finally on its way in July 2011.

The Pasoh TEAM team now consist a small, quirky, yet adventure-loving group of seven staff attached the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), three of who are fully dedicated to the TEAM project. It was a bumpy beginning, but ironed it out with a lot of help from CTFS member, Patrick Jansen, TEAM members Jorge Ahumada, Eric Fergaus, Melissa Rosa and of course the other TEAM Site Managers.

As of November 2011, we have finally managed to establish the vegetation plots, collect vertebrate data from 60 camera trap points and set up the climate station, in which at 52m above ground level, I believe is the tallest climate station in the TEAM network to date.

The monsoon season had started and the hype of activities are gone making the Pasoh TEAM team all excited and anxious for next year’s activities!
