Year:
2011
Quarter:
01 : January - September
Communications activities:

Students and interns from different nationalities participated in the camera trapping field work and photo analysis.

Unusual Events at the TEAM Site:

There was unusually massive rainfall for multiple consecutive days early December 2010. Many animals in the BCNM were found dead, and animals on camera traps sometimes were in poor condition.

Protocol Activities:

(a) Six vegetation plots, established in 2010, were fully measured for the first time in March-April 2011, under supervision of Dr Richard Condit. Entry of measurement data is nearly complete, and data can soon be submitted to the TEAM portal.

(b) Camera traps have been deployed for the first time in two 30-point arrays, one in the Barro Colorado Nature Monument, one in Soberanía National Park, during January-April 2011. The photos were processed with DeskTEAM and data were uploaded to the TEAM portal.

(c) The existing STRI climate tower on BCI has been collecting high-quality climate data over the entire year under the supervision of Dr Helene Muller-Landau.

Protocol Problems:

The existing climate data is logging data in a format that differs from the TEAM format. We are working with Jorge to change the script so that climate data are also logged in TEAM format, in a seprarate file. It would be good if the exisiting data could be converted to TEAM at some point, so the data series would be extended.

Schedule Problems:

Although the climate tower has been fully functional, logging of climate data in TEAM format has not yet started.

Spatial metadata of the vegetation plots, the camera trap points, and the climate tower are still incomplete and will be collected at the 2012 census.
