Protocol Activities:

Climate station: In late December 2011, the Korup climate station was assembled and tested at the base town of Mundemba before installation in the forest. The first test was not successful. Thanks to the advice and the help of the TEAM staff, the second test was successful. The climate station is to be installed in the forest clearing early February. The tower of the climate was put in place at Chimp camp and the necessary information (pictures etc) will be collected when we go back to mount the mast and connect the different sensors.

Camera trap: In late December, the TEAM terrestrial vertebrate protocols were implemented in Korup National Park. A first glance at the images recovered from the first array showed interesting animals such as the Water chevrotains, drills, elephants and the Grey-Necked Picathartes.

Trees and Lianas: The 2011 data for the six 1-ha tree plots for Korup were cleaned and uploaded to the TEAM website.

Protocol Problems:

During the test of the climate station, we had the problem with the Power getting through the SW12 port of the CR1000 and therefore the fan could not move once the CR1000 was connected to battery.

Schedule Problems:

The installation of the climate station was delayed by total inaccessibility of the region during the heavy rainy season, and other logistical problems. Many problems were later solved thanks to the TEAM staff

Logistical Problems:

Charging the Camera trap batteries was a challenge because there was no electricity at the base town of Mundemba for nearly two weeks. The generator of the Center for Tropical Forest Science was used to charge the batteries.
