January - March
Communications activities:

Unusual Events at the TEAM Site:

The weather pattern in Malaysia this year is unexpected, having more rain in January–March 2012 which is usually the drier part of the year.

Protocol Activities:

Terrestrial vertebrate:

The terrestrial team faced some challenges with the installation of DeskTEAM to upload the vertebrate data (camera trap pictures). Once overcome, we started uploading the pictures, approximately 5,000 from Array 1, but much less for Array 2. A total of over 4,000 pictures from cameras deployed in Array 1 have also been uploaded and is being analysed in DeskTEAM.

Vegetation plots 1-6 were measured in January through February 2012 despite the wet weather. The total number of trees is 2,461. The highest tree abundance was in VG_PSH_1 in Array 1, located it the lowland forest of Pasoh Forest Reserve, with over 650 trees in 1ha. Other plots averaged 300-500 trees/ha. Data measurements have been keyed-in while awaiting for some 40% of the specimens to be identified/verified by local taxanomists.

Climate station:

The power problems faced late last year has been overcome but the team is still experiencing problems retrieving data from the memory card and is working with the TEAM technical team to resolve this.

Protocol Problems:

We had problems getting DeskTEAM installed and working. These problems were solved with the help of the TEAM coordinating unit.

We continue to have problems with data logging. This has been communicated to the TEAM Technical group via email communications. Despite useful instructions from the TEAM technical director, the source of the problems could not yet be identified. We continue to attempt resolving this problem as soon as possible.

Schedule Problems:

Sampling schedule for climate data collection may need to be changed since the Pasoh team is still facing problems retrieving data from the datalogger.
