July - September
Communications activities:

During the first week of August 2016, Laza Ralazampirenena (TEAM Site Manager), went to Toliara University to attend the presentation made by the two students who worked with TEAM and ValBio for their academic degree. During that time, Laza presented the mission and the objective of TEAM Project to the students at Toliara University and also made a broadcast at the University Radio. One week after, staff from Radio National Malagasy came to Centre ValBio to interview some of the responsible and head of departments about CVB programs and activities where Laza also talked more about the TEAM project.

On September 6th 2016, a meeting between TEAM and some staff from MNP (Madagascar National Park) was made at Madagascar National Parks office in Ranomafana. We presented to them our planning for the field activity during this monitoring period. We also talked about TEAM data, especially the data collected from Ranomafana National Park.

Jean Claude Razafimahaimondison (September 19th, 2016), the previous TEAM site manager, presented the TEAM Project to the Study Abroad from Stony Brook University as Laza was in the field at this time.

Unusual Events at the TEAM Site:

Protocol Activities:

One field team maintains the monitoring for the Vegetation (six 1-ha plots) and Terrestrial Vertebrate (sixty camera trap points) protocols. During this quarter, all field equipment were cleaned, re-testing the accuracy for the camera traps. On September 7th 2016, we started the first expedition for TEAM 7 at Array 3 (Andemaka-Bevoahazo). Our team stays there until November 2nd 2016.

Vegetation Protocol: the re-censes for the vegetation at plot 2 in Bevoahazo was done.

Terrestrial Vertebrate Protocol: Deployment of the 20 remaining camera trap points for Array 3 (Andemaka-Bevoahazo) have been completed.

Climate Protocol: Monthly climate data collection (the 15th of the month) and bi-weekly climate station maintenance have been conducted regularly. All climate data for this quarter was uploaded to the Portal.

Protocol Problems:

Schedule Problems:

We planned to start field activity for TEAM 7 on July 1st 2016, but we could not start on time as TEAM 7 funding had not yet been received by CVB. Funding did arrive on September 1st , and monitoring activities started at that time.

For future budget consideration:

  • Our initial team gear is aging and needs to be upgraded or replaced in Team 8.
  • Of the 35 camera traps purchased since TEAM 1, 15 are non-functional and we do currently do not have TEAM funds to fix or replace them.
  • the TEAM car also has constant maintenance issues and needs a budget for replacement. It is no longer a reliable mode of transportation.
