July - September
Communications activities:

From 1st to 8th September, the Site Manager attended the 3rd Annual Congress on Conservation Biology in El Jadida, Morocco. The Congress was organized by the African Section of the Society for Conservation Biology and sought to coalesce continent-wide scientific research and information, energy and expertise on conservation challenges in the milieu of globalization.

At the Congress, the Site Manager presented about the TEAM program in Virunga Massif with some insights on the camera trap image results. Apart from learning new things/models, the Congress also offered several opportunities like networking with different researches and creating new partnerships/collaborations to work with.

Unusual Events at the TEAM Site:

No unusual event took place at the site.

New Species:

No new species found so far in this sampling year.

Protocol Activities:

1. Climate Monitoring Protocol

Climate data for July, August and September were downloaded and the climate station was serviced.

2. Terrestrial Vertebrate (camera trap) Monitoring Protocol

In early July, we continued deploying the remaining camera traps and late July we started to pick up the first array of camera traps. In August, we deployed the second array of camera traps from the central area of VNP to the eastern part of VNP and in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Uganda). In mid-September, we started picking up camera traps. The camera trap images annotation is ongoing.

3. Vegetation Monitoring Protocol

No activities related to the vegetation monitoring protocol was undertaken in this quarter. It is scheduled in November.

Protocol Problems:

i) Climate station

We still have the technical issue with the data logger since it is not storing data on the memory card. We download data directly to the computer.

ii) Camera traps

No problem was encountered.

iii) Vegetation plots

No problem was encountered.

Schedule Problems:

No problem was encountered.

Logistical Problems:

No logistical problem was encountered during the reporting period.

We request that CI help us to troubleshoot the issue with the data logger. This has been an outstanding issue that needs to be addressed soon. In addition, we need to have other sensors to be able to calibrate the climate station. At the establishment of the site, they brought one sensor of each type (solar radiation, rainfall, temperature/relative humidity). This is urgent since we have gone beyond the time when the climate station is normally calibrated.
