Year:
2016
Quarter:
October - December
Communications activities:

No Communication activities took place at the site.

Unusual Events at the TEAM Site:

No unusual event took place at the site.

New Species:

No new species found so far in this sampling year.

Protocol Activities:

1.     Climate Monitoring Protocol

Climate data for October, November and December were downloaded and the climate station was serviced.

2.     Terrestrial Vertebrate (camera trap) Monitoring Protocol

In October, we collected the last camera traps in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda. We also proceeded with image annotation. A Total of 80,661 images were annotated and 18 species were identified.

3.     Vegetation Monitoring Protocol

In mid-December, we started data collection on vegetation plots in Volcanoes National Park. By the year closing, we had completed data collection on 5 vegetation plots. The remaining plot located in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park will be completed in early January.

Protocol Problems:

1.     Climate Station

We still have the technical issue with the data logger since it is not storing data on the memory card. We download data directly to the computer. In addition, we don’t have another solar radiation sensor to allow us to calibrate the existing one. We could not remove it because we realized that we had no additional sensor to replace the existing one.

2.     Terrestrial Vertebrates

No problem was encountered during the camera trap deployment. However, we had persistent issues with the DeskTeam software used for annotating the camera trap images. We had only 1 computer with working software and it could stop working at any time. This reduced the speed at which we were annotating images. At the end of annotation, we also had a problem of exporting the image file. We had to do it several times.

3.     Vegetation Plots

No problem was encountered.

Schedule Problems:

No problem was encountered.

Logistical Problems:

No logistical problem was encountered during the reporting period.

Suggestions:

We request CI to help us to troubleshoot the issue with data logger. This has been an outstanding issue that needs to be addressed soon. In addition, we need to have other sensors to be able to calibrate the climate station. At the establishment of the site, they bought one sensor of each type (solar radiation, rainfall, temperature/relative humidity). This is urgent since we have gone beyond the time when the climate station is normally calibrated. In addition, there is a need to fix the bugs found in DeskTeam and several other issues.
