January - March
Communications activities:

On January, the Site Manager gave a talk to students of Javeriana University in Cali – Colombia, from Ecology course about TEAM Camera traps protocol. They were very interested in carry out a full course of phototrapping.

On February, the site manager received a crew of 4 people from CNN’s Great Big Story, an online storytelling platform. The crew interviewed the site manager to hear her story about personal life, TEAM work and understand the role of the role of HP in her work. They filmed the site manager in the field working with the camera traps, using the tools HP provides, and in her own home. The video produced will be profile of the site manager as ambassador for TEAM, OTS and HP.

On March, the site manager completed the training on camera traps technique to park managers, administrators, researchers and local people, in order to develop a network of participatory monitoring for terrestrial vertebrates at the national level. She used the TEAM standardized camera trap protocol as a framework and adjusting it for the needs and resources of Costa Rica’s conservation areas.

Thanks to MAPCOBIO which is the project in charge of promoting this initiative of participatory biodiversity monitoring and the support of the Japanese agency, the national System of Conservation Areas has right now more than seventy cameras running in the field. The park managers will be involved in scientific research. They are going to be in the field again, this time with the community empowering them, which likely will result in something good for the protection of the forest. It also means that park managers are now collecting camera trap data in a similar way to our own and they will eventually contribute to the WPI.

There were not new species at this sampling period.

Protocol Activities:

The climate data (VB-CL2) from January 1st up to March 26th were collected and submitted in the new data entry form version 3.0.

The climate data from CL3 (La Selva weather station) from January 1st up to March 10th  were collected and submitted in the new data entry form version 3.0.

The annual census of trees, palms and lianas ≥10 cm diameter in the 1 ha plot located at 100, 200, 400, 960, 2000 and 2800masl was completed up to date. More than 4000 stems have been measured.

We have completed the terrestrial vertebrates monitoring for the sampling period in array 1 and 2. (low and middle elevation). 40 camera traps were deployed. Interesting sightings of 18 mammals were recorded included felids such as puma and ocelots were observed. 3000 pictures were processed on the deskteam. All data (tpk file) were uploaded in the TEAm server.

Protocol Problems:

There were not protocol problems at this sampling period.

Schedule Problems:

There was a little shchedule problems uploading data from terrestrial vertebrates due possibly erros in connection with the server.

Logistical Problems:

There were not logistical problems at this sampling period.
